Divorce Referendum Results

On 24th November 1995, over a million Irish voters decided in favour of lifting the ban on divorce introduced by Éamon DeValera in his 1937 Constitution (Bunreacht na hEireann).

In a referendum which produced the narrowest margin of any national ballot in the history of the State, the Yes side prevailed, benefitting from a strong urban turnout and a national swing since 1986 of over 13%.

Muintir na hEireann have called for and been granted a Nationwide Recount, which was announced this evening. It is not expected that this will change the result in any material sense.

These results may contain some errors, believed to be errors in transcription made by others. The total error is certanly less than 1,000 votes in any case. We are looking for the most authoratative figures which will appear here tonight.
